What a Catholic funeral in Singapore involves

When a loved one passes, the decisions come faster than the grief allows. Within hours, families are asked about the vigil, the Mass, the committal and timing. Ang Brothers handles all of it, so you can simply be with your family.

A Catholic funeral usually follows three stages: the vigil, with wake prayers often led by the Rosary; the Funeral Mass, also called the Requiem Mass, held at the parish church; and the rite of committal at the cemetery or columbarium. The crucifix, holy water and the liturgical prayers of the Church are central throughout. We coordinate closely with your parish priest and church, arranging the wake, the transport to the church for Mass, and the committal. Burial or cremation is permitted, with ashes placed at a Catholic columbarium such as those at the Church of St Anne or Choa Chu Kang.

What happens, step by step

Families often feel calmer once they can see the whole journey laid out. A Catholic funeral moves through three stages, and here is the usual sequence.

In the first hours

The deceased is collected from the home, hospital or hospice and prepared with care. The death is certified, and we contact your parish priest to set the dates for the vigil, the Requiem Mass and the committal.

The vigil, with wake prayers and the Rosary

The first stage is the vigil. At the wake, family and friends gather to pray, often reciting the Rosary, beside the casket set with a portrait, the crucifix and candles.

The Funeral Mass, the Requiem Mass at the church

The second stage is the Funeral Mass, the Requiem Mass, celebrated by the priest at the parish church. We arrange the transport of the casket and the family to the church, where holy water and the liturgical prayers of the Church are central to the service.

The rite of committal

The third stage is the committal at the cemetery or columbarium. Final prayers are offered as the deceased is laid to rest. Both burial and cremation are permitted by the Church.

After the committal

Where the family chooses cremation, we handle the collection of ashes and their placement at a Catholic columbarium, such as those at the Church of St Anne or Choa Chu Kang.

Symbols and what they mean

  • The crucifix: placed at the wake and carried through the rites, the central sign of the Christian hope in the Resurrection.
  • Holy water: used to bless the deceased, a reminder of Baptism and the welcome into eternal life.
  • The Rosary: prayed at the vigil, a way for the family to keep prayerful watch together.
  • Flowers and candles: signs of remembrance and of the light of faith.

If you are attending

Dress modestly in black or subdued colours. Follow the responses and standing during the Mass where you can, receive Communion only if you are a practising Catholic, and know that your prayerful, calm presence matters more than knowing every part of the liturgy.

Common questions

Catholic funeral FAQ

Do you coordinate the Requiem Mass with our parish?

Yes. We work directly with your parish priest and church to set the date and time of the Funeral Mass, and we arrange the transport of the casket and the family to the church for the service.

Do you arrange the vigil and the Rosary?

Yes. We set up the wake for the vigil, with the crucifix, candles and a place for the family and friends to gather and pray the Rosary together beside the casket.

Burial or cremation, and which Catholic columbarium?

Both burial and cremation are permitted by the Church, and we arrange either. Where the family chooses cremation, we handle the collection of ashes and placement at a Catholic columbarium, such as those at the Church of St Anne or Choa Chu Kang.

How much does a Catholic funeral cost?

Our Catholic Graceful Tribute package is $5,388 nett for 3 days, fully itemised with nothing hidden. See the full breakdown on our Catholic funeral packages page, or call or WhatsApp us for the complete price list.

What should we expect at each of the three stages?

The vigil comes first, with wake prayers often led by the Rosary. The Funeral Mass, the Requiem Mass, follows at the parish church. The rite of committal at the cemetery or columbarium comes last. We guide your family through each stage and coordinate every detail with the church.
